How to Give Your Client What They Want as an Interior Designer

Not everybody is a designer. That much is clear. Though many might think that they have the skills, intuition, and knowledge to be brilliant and sought after interior designers, the reality of the matter is that is probably not true. Everyone has their own style. If you think something looks good in a home or commercial space, that means nothing to somebody who has different taste than you.


When you’re an interior designer, the most important thing you can achieve is getting to know your client and understanding what they like and what their style is. For your own home, the final product will look much different than when you’re designing for somebody else. If you’re still on the path of finding out how to give your clients what they want even when they’re not sure what they want, here are some things you should do:

Ask Questions

Communication is the number one priority in a relationship between designer and client. As a designer, you might have to ask questions aimed at leading your client towards a solid answer. They might not know what they like or want. Your job is to know the questions to ask to narrow the pool.

Are they fans of a certain color scheme? Are they carpet, hardwood, or stone people? The questions go on and on. As a designer, don’t be afraid to ask the questions that will give you more knowledge and insight into what your client wants out of your services.

Work With the Architect If Possible

If you’re taking on a space that is commercial, as a designer it will be beneficial to work with the architect from the beginning stages. If the client is looking for wide open spaces, you can’t effectively take something that doesn’t fit the client’s vision and make it as if it were so. You, the architect, and the builders all need to be on the same page from the beginning to give the client everything that they’re looking for.

Keep the Client in the Loop

The real interior design world is not like the process you see on TV. When people go on television shows, they sign a disclaimer handing over their rights to say anything to the show. The designer will try and fit their vision, but if they don’t hit the nail on the head, the homeowners don’t get a do over for all of their money spent.

As a designer, you’ll need to keep your clients in the loop at all times. Don’t go off and spend a bunch of their money in order to fulfill your vision for their home without communicating with them first. This is probably the most important part of being a successful interior designer. Be sensitive, listen, and know when people are telling you no.
